Marie Lu is another one of those authors I will forever read anything and everything from. She stole my heart with her Legend series. I will admit however that I have not been as dutiful with her books as I have Kagawa. That being said!!! I am making an effort to catch up on her books this year!

I will say that this series is a little harder to get into. Don't get me wrong, this book starts off with some intensity. The first 1/4 of the book is dark and intense. Adelina had a rough life. I mean...ROUGH. As a short disclaimer, it may be a little triggering to some people as we go through her flashbacks and the start of her journey to being "free". The world building and setting of this book was interesting. I'm not going to lie, the entire premise of these power gifted children seemed a bit cheesy to me at first.

The next 2/4 (so 2/4 & 3/4 of the book) is a lot of push through. You have to bear with me through this part of the book. Trust me! It's worth it. Adelina is so weak and pouty. She's very annoying in her wallowing and it's pretty slow paced as we get into the politics, the character introductions and development of these characters, as well as some more world building and pace setting. It was a little hard for me to get through too...

THEN BAM!!! Things start crashing. Things start burning. Tables get tossed, people are dying in the streets and we have full on chaos! It was amazing! That ending? Geeze you guys. Please trust me when I say the last 1/4 of this book makes the entire book worth it. The potential is set and you're locked in. Adelina, mi Adelenita....ugh. She broke my heart and ripped it to shreds. I also simultaneously could feel her heart, all its scars, and the shreds it kept developing. She is chaos in the making. The story telling of a villains development was genius and unique to me. I had yet to read something so obvious in its villain making.

Would I recommend it? Hells-to-the-freaking-yes!!

Book Rating: 4/5 Stars
