I really liked the first book. I did. It was exciting and new. I hadn't read a book with a historical timeline in awhile and happy that this series woke up that interest of mine again. While I liked the first book, it did have some downfalls and I think I talked about the fact that it seemed more like a warm up in my review of the first book, The Gilded Wolves.

Let me just say, I'm glad I experienced that "warm up" because the sequel was much more magical and beautifully written. I was amazed at the setting we were given and the characters featured. I was so happy with this read! I'll admit that while I was happy Severin and Laila were even more irritating in this book than the last but I have high hopes for their progression in the series finale. They both have been building up for awhile and needed it based off their character type. That being said...I fell even more in love with Enrique and Zophia and Hypnos than I did before. I almost wish that they'd take over the entire book lol The characters still stand to be my favorite part of this series which says a lot in itself when your'e reading a book about magical artifacts in 1800's France/Russia.

If you haven't picked this series up yet, I recommend it. Especially if you're into a friend group causing trouble and adventuring for hidden ancient artifacts that can cost them their life, friendship, and pride. Pride or the experience of letting go of one's pride was the majority of the theme and I loved it. We got to know these characters and their insecurities in the first book and then really get to the route of their pride and what bruised them. All around lovely and pure. Thoroughly enjoyed my time reading from each character again.

I told my fiance at the start of me reading this book that I felt like I was witnessing Roshani's greatness progress. She grows with each book and I can't wait for each and every of her future books. This is only the start of what she can do. You can feel it. Another series I don't want to let go of this year...

Four Stars to this beautiful sequel.
